Superwoman

•28 May, 2009 • 3 Comments

In the middle of a 10am-12nn meeting, I received a text message from my boss expecting my weekly report by 1 pm.  Not a problem, it’s a report I’ve been doing every week since I took on the job 2 weeks earlier.  All I had to do was consolidate 10 excel files, summarize them, validate the accuracy of the figures, analyze them, double check them, create 5 separate reports and send them to 5 different groups, and then merge them all again into 1 report to send to a different set of people, and I’m done.  After all, I’ve survived countless sleepless nights in college preparing for an IE exam after running 5 km. in football training as warm up.  Even solving calculus problems in my sleep just to maximize the time.  I’ve triumphed over a bladder ready to explode in order to meet my deadlines at my previous job.  This report was in the bag. Except that I had exactly 60 minutes to go after my meeting was adjourned.  Considering the rush hour traffic in Makati, the ride back to my office in Mandaluyong and the thousand of minutes I had, the report was more than do-able and I am Superwoman.

I was ready to fly when I realized I haven’t swallowed the magic stone and put on my blue tights – I was still in my trousers and button-down shirt.  So I decided first to inform the boss of my sked, hoping she’d be considerate enough to extend the deadline.  Appealing to her better judgment was so worth it.  1pm deadline became 1:30pm. With just 1 text message, my 60 minutes lengthened to 90 minutes.  Work would then be a cinch.  I could really use the extra 30 minutes to grab a Caramel Macchiato and a chocolate dipped donut, and even have it warmed.  I may have extra time also to catch up on my emails which have probably gone up to a hundred by then.  Maybe even enough time for a walk in the park.

In the office, every day was the same.  Every day was normal.  There was not much time pressure because most deadlines are end of day, and when I say end of day, it really is end of day, like 11:45pm when everyone else is at home sleeping or out drinking.  Because working hours of 8am-5pm are reserved for meetings.  One morning, I received an email and text message again from the boss saying she needs the weekly reports to be in by 12nn.  It was 10:45am.  She’s a fast learner.  I bet she figured if she gave me an hour again I would ask for an extension so out of the goodness of her heart she gave me extra 15 minutes without waiting for me to ask for it.  Everything was under control.  I just needed that extra 15 minutes to get coffee and a bagel with cream cheese.

During our team lunch aka welcome and goodbye lunch for the new people in the office who are also leaving – I’m one of them, the boss asked me to cite the qualifications needed for my position.  Before I could say anything, she blurts out – “Oh, and don’t say superwoman!”

Why didn’t they tell me that during the interviews?!  No wonder I’m unemployed now.  I was over-qualified. :-P

25 Random Things

•24 February, 2009 • 2 Comments

I’ve been tagged twice in this “25 Random Things” note in Facebook.  I do not feel like writing there so I’ll do it here instead.  Basically you’re just supposed to write 25 random things, goals, habits and facts about you.  So here goes…

  1. I love coffee.  Love it with a passion.
  2. My ambition is to become an astronomer.  I think I was in 3rd grade when I told myself I have to get in UP because they offer that course.  Well, I just assumed because they had this planetarium.  Haha.  Stupid me.
  3. Given #2, my room is decorated with a lot of glow in the dark heavenly bodies.  I have attempted to recreate a portion of the sky but I got frustrated when the stars kept falling off the wall and the constellations became unrecognizable.
  4. I had my very own joke book when I was a kid.  I think I started writing it when I was in pre-school.  I was too ashamed of it when I grew up so I threw it away.  Damn.  One of my regrets in life.  Tsktsk.
  5. My nursery (or kinder) teacher wrote in her assessment that I’m an introvert.  The very first line says, “Rosarie is an introvert. blahblahblah.”.  Love it.  Teachers are so direct.
  6. I was in the track and field varsity when I was in high school.  I don’t know how and why I got myself into it.
  7. I love football.
  8. I like to play loud music while I’m driving.  I dance and sing my heart out and I don’t care that people see me - my car is so not tinted!  Hehe.
  9. I hate mayonnaise.  Yuck yuck yuck!
  10. I love candies!  I wanted to work in Wonka and design all those packaging and create my own candies.
  11. First thing I do when I get home is to drink water.  Weird.
  12. The first exam that I ever failed (I think) was my Filipino exam when I was in 2nd year HS.  Sucks.  Boooo…  I have always hated Filipino class.
  13. I had a short stint of being a saleswoman (if that’s what it’s called) when I was a kid, later years of GS I think.  One summer my dad “hired” me together with my ate and cousin to go around Makati area and get subscribers for Newsweek.  I was so shy then.  I don’t know how I managed to go around campaigning.  But we were successful.  We did get a number of subscribers.  I think they were just curious and sort of “pitied” us because we were all too young and most of them figured we were kids of the owner.  Haha.
  14. I also had a short stint as a machinist at our gunsmithing shop.  Haha!
  15. Out of boredom, I made my own clothes cabinet.  I did it from designing and doing the specs, to sawing the wood panels, and nailing them together.  Crazy.
  16. Before, Ionly drink mineral water.  I have learned to drink restaurant’s house water.  Hehe.  Although, I think I’m going back to my old ways.
  17. I want to wear a skirt to work but I’m jahe with my football legs.  Tsktsk.
  18. I don’t watch TV.  But I’m learning now.  Living alongehas taught me to appreciate a television.
  19. I love videoke!!!  Woohoooo…
  20. I am going back to school this coming June!  Apparently, I wasn’t satisfied with studying Industrial Engineering for 5 years.  I’m up for another 5 years…  at Law school.  Waahh.
  21. My frustration?  Dancing!!!
  22. I love shoes.
  23. I find shopping therapeutic.
  24. I always win the biggest-bag-award when we go on 7-10-day trips for Unigames.
  25. My feet (next to face – this a given - to be the first) is the first spot I put sunblock on.

LAE Results

Waaaaahhhhh…  So funny.  So crazy.  This is ridiculous.  Anyway, I passed the UP LAE.  I didn’t think about it anymore after taking the exam since I didn’t expect to pass.  I wasn’t really prepared for it and taking the exam was quite a spur of the moment.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m serious about getting into law school.  It’s just that how I got myself into this seems like a joke.

Yesterday was a very horrible day for me.  So glad it ended with this news.  Once again I’d be saying this…  I BELIEVE IN DIVINE INTERVENTION.

I was making my coffee this morning and when I was about to put the sugar, natigilan ako.  The pack (Country Style) says: “It’s going to be a good day!”. Nice!  :)   God reminds us to greet the day with optimism and a smile.  I may be the most bugnutin person in the world but who cares?!?!  I still can read and appreciate the signs/reminders. ;-)

10% student, 90% athlete

•25 January, 2009 • 1 Comment

I’m feeling fat and bloated because I lack exercise.  That’s probably the reason why I’m missing football! :(  Well, I sort of miss studying too.  Actually, I miss being in college.  College life’s so cool expecially when you’re 10% student and 90% athlete! ;-)

UAAP '05 - Championship Game vs. DLSU

I might seem a bulakbol with the 10:90 split but don’t get me wrong, I was also serious with my studies.  Serious enough to manage to graduate on time.  Hahaha!!!  I’d like to think that graduating on time is already an achievement given that only around 25 out of the approximately 110 from my batch got lucky.  I think this is the usual statistics in UP Engineering, not just for my course, Industrial Engineering.  My friends graduated as laudes.  My mom calls them honor students, while she calls me horror student!  Hahaha!!!  What do you expect from a 10% student anyway?!

2nd Place & Fair Play Award

2nd Place & Fair Play Award

Athlete does not equate to the word play.  So 10% student:90% athlete is not similar to 10% academics:90% fun fun play.  10:90 is the life listed below…

  • 7am-5pm school, 5:30-8:30pm training, evening to sawa is group project time
  • M-F school, M-Sun training & game
  • Leaving the house and getting home with the moon up and not having an idea how the house looks like when the sun’s up
  • 3-4 hrs. of sleep everyday
  • Liters of coke and coffee every night to stay awake and “study”
  • Packets of gum to keep me awake in class
  • Leaving my car key in the ignition (I did this more than 5 times hehehe) because I was always sleepy and lost every morning
  • Minor car accidents (scratches and bumps hihihi), again due to the reason above
  • Cramming cramming cramming!!!  In the truest sense of the word ;-)
  • No sem-break.  Around 10 days spent out of town for Unigames – Bacolod, Dumaguete, and Cavite.
  • No Christmas break and summer.  Training training training!
  • Major crankiness hehehe.  Who wouldn’t be if you’re tired, sleepy and stressed?!?! :-P
  • “Diet”.  More conscious on what to and what not to eat.  And until what time we can still eat.  Argh!
  • Injuries.  Therapies.
  • Enrolment priority!  Weeee…  But people stare at us like they want to butcher us to death.  Hehehe.
  • Scholarship.  I only pay for student fund which is Php 45.  It reaches to Php 95 when I don’t pay on time.  Funny.  The 50 peso fine’s more expensive than my tuition. :-P
  • Money money money!  Since I have scholarship, I get to keep the real amount of my tuition.  Weeee!!!!  Thanks pa.
  • Celebrations after winning.  Inuman after losing.  Hahaha…  Well, win or lose, inuman all the time. :-D
  • Jogging/sprinting until we drop dead.
  • Kicking until our legs give up.
  • Ab workout until we have our 6-pack (ummm hindi din eh hahaha)
  • Play, rain or shine.
  • Swimming in mud.
  • Going to church on lunch breaks to pray and de-stress
Unigames - either Dumaguete or Bacolod

Unigames - either Dumaguete or Bacolod

Interesting?!  Super!  Very tiring  too!  I have thought of giving up football several times because I’m getting stressed with my acads.  But I couldn’t let go of it.  Because football meant more than the fun and stress listed above.  Being in the varsity taught me a lot of things:

  • Time management
  • Discipline
  • Self-control
  • Teamwork
  • Knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses
  • Knowing and pushing one’s self to the limit
  • Camaraderie
  • Mind over matter (?!?!)  Burn out is all in the mind.  Same with stress, pain, etc.
  • Accepting defeat.  Cherishing victory.

Every time I look back, I always tell myself that college made me believe in divine intervention.  I think this is one of the best realizations I got from my being 10% student, 90% athlete.  It was thru Him that I graduated on time and my body didn’t give up with all the physical, mental and emotional stress!!! :)

Cooking Time

•18 January, 2009 • 1 Comment

My first week at the condo, I was so tamad so I just microwave my food.  But on the 2nd week, I decided to be a chef.  Hahaha…  To make my life easier, I already prepared and packed the ingredients per meal, with the help of my mom.  She also gave me the recipes.

Monday…  Ginisang gulay

image008

Tuesday…  Ginisang gulay (left over hehe) & pork tocino

image007

Wednesday…  Sarsiadong alumahan

image006

Thursday…  Rest day.  Hehehe…  Dinner out with friends at Pepper Lunch, Shang.  Good food.  :)

Friday…  Tuna casserole & roast chicken (didn’t cook this one).

image010

I didn’t have any rice so everything came with bread  hehe…  Plus I needed to finish a whole loaf on my own so I had no choice.

I’m excited for next week.  I still have to think of the menu…  Probably some shrimps, fish and veggies…  Hmmmm…

GABC Farewell Speech

•3 January, 2009 • 5 Comments

Technically, today, January 2, 2009, is my last day in GABC.  But since it was declared that today’s a holiday, then my last day in the office was last December 24.  Hassle!  Work on the 24th was only half day.  Some didn’t go to work anymore.  Others were too busy.  I didn’t get a chance to talk to people and say goodbye.  Boohooo…  I didn’t have a despedida.  Argh.  :-( So I’ll just write here my farewell speech.  Hahahaha pathetic!

To my IPA friends/lunchmates/MWF friends/Nassi buddies/bowling teammates & opponents (including ex-GABC hehe) – Escabi, Lynn Mae, Cherry O., Kichie, Camille, Elly, Bala-G, Kat Tan, Analyn Old Samson Road:

Ang gulo-gulo niyo!!!  Behave na kayo!  Hahaha…  Kidding.  Thank you soooo much for all the laughter and crazy stories especially over lunch.  Please, aliwin niyo isa’t-isa.  Make sure Lynn and Min won’t fight, okay?  Don’t be too uptight (wala akong pinatatamaan hehehehe).  ChiEllax!  :-D Kahit wala na ko, gawan niyo pa din ako ng video.  Tapos burn niyo na lang sa DVD.  Hahahaha…  Please, bowling tayo uli?  I’m super near Galleria na hahahaha.  :-)

Escabi, chill!  Or else you’ll go insane, especially now that you’re facing the wall.

Lynn Mae, please continue bullying Min.  Hihihi.  RAR will support you.  I’m glad you’re so much stronger now.  Yikee, big girls don’t cry.  :-P

Cherry O., good luck with ForMe.  The brand is so easy to love, including the people.  :-)

Kichie, bawal panggap na busy, magagalit si Lynn.

Camille, continue amusing everyone with your stories especially Min.  Thanks for making me use your coffee maker!  Love it!

Elly, wooohooo we rocked when we were in PIW.  Harharhar.  You were my first mentor, thanks for the patience!

Bala-G, astig when we were both in ForMe.  I won’t forget the times (yeah, pasko time yun last 2007 grrrr) when we both rushed to Ms. Maya to have our BP checked.  Bwahahahaha…  OA HB/BV noh?!  Inhale exhale ka muna.  I know toxic jan sanyo hehehe.  Good luck!  6 months probationary ka ba?  Ako 3 ata so magaabot tayo!  Hahaha.

Kat Tan, idol sa kabaitan.  Visit kita when I go to Australia to visit my relatives.

Ana, please don’t be tampo anymore.  Sorry na!!!  Wahahaha…  Let’s just sing: Meeee—ya-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

To my TTh friends – Queen AhmiLala & Mels:

Hello!!!  Good luck to you, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing or plan on doing.  I miss TTh “special” lunch – Superbowl, Chowking, Yellowcab, Starbucks (?!?!), etc…  I miss mamahaling tsokolate!!!

Lala O., super thanks for the patience.  Sorry for my bratinella moments.

Mels, thanks for friendship Parts I, II, and III.  :-P Sorry for everything in between.

To other ex-GABC friends – Ms. My & J1:

Ms. My, I miss your kwentong lasing.  Hahaha…  Sa facebook na lang tayo nagkukulitan.

Brat, hamishu!  Sayang, short time lang tayo together sa ForMe.  But thanks for those few months! :-)

Wheng, trabaho lang walang personalan lahat ng nangyari.  Hehehe…  Don’t worry, malayong malayo sakin si Ms. Cherry.  She’s patient and calm, my exact opposite hehehe.  Thanks for everything and good luck!  Galingan niyo ha.  Dapat quota forever!  :-D

To other IPA people:

Booo to you all, nabawasan na naman ng maingay sa office.  Hahaha…  Thanks for everything.  See you around!

Ma’am Ren, thank you for your trust and guidance.  Thank you for all the opportunities you provided me.  And thanks for listening to me when I badly wanted to talk to you (ummm… PIW days when I wanted to be transferred hehe).  Stay cool.  Let’s still play badminton and bowling!

To my badminton friends – IT boys (Marvin, Exe, Ron), MBG gurls (Jen, JoAnn & Karen Caw), Ginger, IPA pips (Lynn, Min, Len & RAR) etc. (waaahhh dumami na kasi, hindi ko na maremember lahat):

Thanks for the numerous badminton nights and chitchats after.  Invite me still okay?!  But pwede back to Wednesdays na?  Coding ng Thursday eh.  Hehe…

To my MBG friends/projectmates – Paullette, Anna, Tinne, Babbett, Karen, JoAnn, Roch:

I have pressured you a lot, especially Paullette.  Hihihi… Sorry na!  Trabaho lang.  Harhar…  Thank you.  It was great working with all of you.

Project OBAMA friends, Babbett, JoAnn & Roch, galingan niyo!  Whew, slighlty done na naman ata part ko eh.  Yey!

MBG Foreign group, I heart you!!!  Pinapakain niyo ko palagi!  Woohoooo.  Thanks thanks.

To the ForMe team:

Thank you for making me ampon for almost 2 weeks.  Hehehe…  I really deserve the “Squatter Award”  :-D

Ms. Chim, it was a pleasure working with you.  :-) Thank you!

Mariel, waaaahhhhh I will miss you!  Always remember, you are the model MM.  Yikeee.  Thank you so much.  Work was easy having you around.  In short, it was a disaster when you were in ML.  :-P hahahaha… joke!  Thanks for the Christmas gift.  Love the coffeemaker!  :-)

Karen, I will miss you too.  Iba na kukulitin mo sa projection hehehe…

Starlets, thanks for everything.  Keep in touch!

Ms. Arlyn, thanks for the short time we got to work with each other.  Good luck with ForMe.  I really hope the brand will soar in 2009!!!  :-)

To DC/QC:

Super thanks for accommodating all ForMe’s urgent requests (hehehe Ms. Corin you’re the best).  Na-harass ba kayo?!  Hihihi

I know I failed to mention a lot of people, but this is too long already!!!  Hahaha…  Basta!!!  Thank you to everyone who’s been part of my colorful 2 1/2- year GABC life.  :-) I will miss you all.

This year is gonna be incredible
This year is gonna be the one
All the planets are lining up for me
This year, I’m gonna have fun

This year, I’ll paint my masterpiece
This year, I’ll be recognized
I can feel like I’ll fall in love for real
This year, this year

January, I’ll learn to fly
February, love’s gonna find me
March, April, May, I’ll get carried away
Oh, oh…

This year, I’ll reach that pinnacle
This year, I’ll get to the top
People will ask where she get that energy
This year, I’m never gonna stop
